About ReefCl: Eco-Tourism, Marine Conservation Diving Expeditions
The majority of people who come on these eco-tourism and marine conservation diving expeditions/trips are passionate about the environment and want to put something back (Responsible Tourism). The ReefCI trips are ‘laid back' and focused on conserving the environment, at the same time as enjoying a well earned break! You can be involved in non intensive or more intensive marine conservation work, the choice is yours…..
Experienced divers, people who want to learn to dive and non divers are welcome…. everyone contributes.
The Directors have worked on and developed a wide variety of marine conservation projects. One is a PADI Open Water Instructor and the other a Divemaster. They have dived in many places throughout the world including: The Red Sea, Honduras, Mexico, Columbia, Thailand, The Maldives, Florida, Costa Rica, South Africa, Lake Malawi, Western and Eastern Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Galapagos and of course Belize.
ReefCI are a member of an international organisation called Reef Check which is a simple data collection methodology that can be utilised by recreational divers. Reef Check has a presence in more than 82 countries around the world with an aim to obtain a global synoptic assessment of human impacts upon coral reefs. http://www.reefcheck.org
ReefCI are a recognized Project Aware Eco-Operator and participate in both Project Aware’s Coral Watch and Whale Shark programmes.
Volunteer Diving Expeditions in Belize
ReefCI are working with The Department of Fisheries and NGO's (non government organisations) in Belize. It is important to ReefCI that we work with local organisations in order to ensure the research we collect benefits the host country. ReefCI are working directly with the Belizean Department of Fisheries on commercial species projects that have a high economic value such as lobster and conch. We are conducting Reef Check surveys and analysing the data as well as making comparisons with data collected from protected and non protected areas. This works very well as ReefCI are the only organisation that are consistently diving in the area, we often discover new things and have even discovered new fish spawning grounds.
Our projects include working on the spawning fish aggregations, lobster and conch surveys, commercial fish surveys, water quality assessment, plankton study, habitat study, social-economic impact on the reef, pollution assessment, nursery habitats, turtle monitoring, and sea grass studies. This is very exciting; work is much needed in the area. We are working together on other projects such as the YOUTH path project where we are sponsoring young local people to become Dive Masters and Tour Guides.
