We have had the most amazing diving during the past few months.  To name just a few, we have sighted Whale Sharks, a Lemon shark, a huge Hammerhead shark (about 10ft!) and giant tuna...

The Whale Sharks
This year I had the best Whale shark experience since I came to Belize 5 years ago.  The previous day our guests experienced the amazing string of pearls night dive; this is a phenomenon that happens in very few places in the world, one of them being southern Belize...

ReefCI celebrate our 5th anniversary!

70% of the planet is made up of ocean. On land, we can observe and collect samples while walking, driving or flying from one environment to the next, sometimes crossing several ecosystems in less than a few hours!  In the ocean, ecosystems tend to be large, hundreds or thousands of kilometers in scale. It can take weeks for a ship to move from one environment into the next.  No wonder exploration of the sea remains one of the most technologically difficult and expensive tasks on the planet!  But humans are ingenious creatures and over time we have developed clever ways of sampling and visiting the deep-ocean realm. Unfortunately, though, we are still relegated to brief visits, restricted in both time and space. Consider the idea of sampling a bit more carefully. For instance, if you could take just 10 samples of the seafloor to determine its nature, where, when and how would you do it and what would the results mean? If 1 out of the 10 samples were hard live coral, does that mean that 10 percent of the seafloor is made up of such substrate? And if so, how is it distributed over the wide seafloor? For any scientific endeavor the number of samples collected greatly influences the magnitude of the knowledge gained. The more samples collected, the more accurate the interpretation of the data, and often the first interpretation is later proven incorrect as more observations are made.

That is why we are eternally grateful to all of our customers who have contributed to our data collection during the past 5 years. This month (July) ReefCI will be 5 years old. It takes 5 years of baseline data to start getting actual results. We have collected 4 years of baseline data, so this year’s annual report will be extremely important as we start to get some of these actual results! Of course we have also made new friends, had some amazing experiences and had lots of fun!
