Climate Change and Coral Reefs
October 20, 2017

Climate change is an existential threat to coral reefs. Climate Change = Ocean Change.
- Warming Oceans = Coral Bleaching
- Sea Level Rise = Smothering of Coral
- Changes in Storm Patterns = Destruction of Reef Structure
- Changes in Precipitation = Algal Blooms and Reduced Light
- Altered Ocean Currents = Lack of Food and Dispersal of Larvae
- Ocean Acidification = Decreased Coral Growth Rate
Although the consequences of a warming planet are profound, there are things you can do to combat climate change in your everyday life and in turn help coral reefs.
- Drive less
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Purchase energy efficient appliances and lightbulbs
- Print less, download more
- Volunteer for beach and waterway clean ups
What difference can I make? I’m just one person. Yes this is true… Individually, we are but one small drop, but together we are an ocean. Be the change you wish to see in the world!
