Climate Change and Coral Reefs

coralreef-climate-index

Climate change is an existential threat to coral reefs.  Climate Change = Ocean Change.

  • Warming Oceans = Coral Bleaching
  • Sea Level Rise = Smothering of Coral
  • Changes in Storm Patterns = Destruction of Reef Structure
  • Changes in Precipitation = Algal Blooms and Reduced Light
  • Altered Ocean Currents = Lack of Food and Dispersal of Larvae
  • Ocean Acidification = Decreased Coral Growth Rate

Although the consequences of a warming planet are profound, there are things you can do to combat climate change in your everyday life and in turn help coral reefs.

  • Drive less
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Purchase energy efficient appliances and lightbulbs
  • Print less, download more
  • Volunteer for beach and waterway clean ups

What difference can I make?  I’m just one person.  Yes this is true…  Individually, we are but one small drop, but together we are an ocean.  Be the change you wish to see in the world!
