The ReefCI Experience: Marine Conservation in Belize
If you’re looking to see the world without harming the ecosystem, ReefCI will turn ocean conservation into a sightseeing adventure on a private Caribbean island no one will forget. Located on Tom Owens Caye, near Placencia, Belize, the ReefCI team happily invites you to dive into the clear blue waters, learn about the local ecology, and how to protect our extremely diverse marine life in the magnificent Belize Barrier Reef.

Dive Into Daily Conservation Work
The team at ReefCI focuses on showing people how to conserve marine life while simultaneously exploring it. We feel exposure to its beauty helps people understand why it’s so important to maintain it. Volunteers will help to remove invasive lionfish, assist in coral replanting, and log species data during reef surveys. We also take time to clear the beaches and water of debris, as well as monitor the sea turtles!
Who Volunteers?
ReefCI welcomes ocean lovers of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re a student on a gap year, a mid-career adventurer, or a retiree giving back, you’ll feel at home in our friendly, purpose-driven community. Many ReefCI volunteers come solo, and about half are new to diving — but all leave feeling part of something larger. PADI dive training is available on-site, and certified divers can level up with specialty courses.

Living the Island Life
Tom Owens Caye is remote — no roads, no Wi-Fi — just turquoise water, coconut trees, and the reef on your doorstep. You’ll stay in shared eco-lodges or beach cabanas powered by solar energy, enjoy home-cooked meals, and fall asleep to the sound of the sea. It’s rustic but comfortable, and the island’s pace quickly becomes second nature.
Each week includes five full days on the island, with optional weekend breaks in Placencia for inland adventures. Meals accommodate dietary needs, and we supply all dive gear.
How to Get Here
Arrive in Placencia, Belize, by Sunday night; our boat departs Monday morning. After a one-hour ride across the Caribbean, you’ll arrive at your new island home. Volunteers stay 1–4 weeks, and we provide detailed pre-trip guidance to help you prepare.
Why ReefCI?
