Plastic pollution is a big problem in Belize, as it is all over the world. The accumulation of plastic and micro plastics threatens the beautiful beaches and rich biodiversity of this Central American nation. The coastal areas, particularly the Belize Barrier Reef, face significant risks from plastic debris, which can harm marine life and disrupt delicate ecosystems. With tourism being a major part of Belize’s economy, the impact of plastic pollution extends beyond the environment to affect livelihoods and the nation’s overall health.

In response to this growing concern, Belize has taken several initiatives to combat plastic pollution. The government has implemented bans on single-use plastics, including plastic bags and straws, to reduce the volume of plastic waste generated. Community awareness campaigns have also been launched to educate the public about reducing plastic consumption and promoting sustainable alternatives. These efforts are crucial for fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among residents and visitors alike.

What is Reef Conservation International doing to battle the issue of plastic pollution!  We are getting our hands dirty with the help of our volunteers.  Through our weekly beach cleanups on the Belize Barrier Reef islands, we remove on average over 30,000 pounds of plastic pollution annually.  Join us and be part of the solution!
